Andalusia Disc
The traditional general-purpose bike is still at the heart of cycling. Mountain bikes and lightweight racing machines are wonderful for mountains and races, but for reliable, enjoyable transport in urban or rural environments, you need a quality city bike. Taking appropriate technology from both MTB and road bike fields, Schauff have produced the Andalusia Disc, a bike that can take the rider far from the city as easily and as well as to the shops.

Magura Louise disc brakes front and rear will be a revelation for anyone who hasn't experienced the all-weather, long-lasting stopping power of disks. You can fly down hills knowing that brakes will stop with power and control no matter what the load. Even in the rain, there's no need to clench the levers painfully: a light touch is enough - particularly welcome for riders with weak hands.

Mudguards, rack and dynamo lights are fitted as standard to the lightweight cromoly frame. Gears are Shimano LX 27-speed, with XT derailleurs. The Union Quattro dynamo runs Busch & Müller lights, the rear light with a 'standlight' that stays alight even when stationary. Both lights have reflectors built in. The Andalusia Disc comes with a unisex Selle San Marco Regal leather suspended saddle, while the hand sewn leather grips on the handlebars provide the finishing touch.

Another general-purpose bike with a difference is Schauff 's Alexis Electric 700C: the world's first fully-suspended electric bike using 700C wheels. Front suspension is a spring elastomer, with hydraulic rear suspension, and both are adjustable for ride quality and rider weight.

Schauff have been producing suspension cruising bikes since 1993, and these are especially popular for riders with back problems or rheumatism. This electric-assist version should, say Schauff, open up cycling to even more people. A low step-through frame and a weight of 26kg add to the ease of use. The power is supplied by a Mitsubishi power pack, and the computer controlled Ni-Cd battery pack gives 40km (25 miles) range. A SRAM seven-speed hub gear offers a wide gear range and low maintenance, and the bike comes complete with rack, mudguards and dynamo lighting system.
